Description Of The Flag

North Korea's National Flag: Symbolism and Meaning

Description of the Flag

The national flag of the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (North Korea) consists of three horizontal stripes. The central stripe is wide and red, representing the spirit of revolution. Above and below the red stripe are two narrower white stripes, symbolizing purity and peace. The outermost stripes are blue, representing the country's location on the Korean peninsula and the surrounding seas.

Off-Centered White Disk

Off-center toward the hoist (left side) is a white disk containing a red five-pointed star. The disk represents the unity of the Korean people, while the star represents the Workers' Party of Korea, the ruling party of North Korea.

Symbolic Meaning

The North Korean flag symbolizes the country's revolutionary history, aspiration for peace, and socialist ideology. The red stripe represents the blood shed during the Korean War, while the white stripes represent the hope for a peaceful future. The blue stripes symbolize the country's connection to the Korean peninsula and the surrounding seas.
