Sevilla Win Europa League on Penalties
Nunez, Alario Miss as Manchester United Claim First European Trophy Since 2017
The 2023 UEFA Europa League final was decided by the finest of margins in a penalty shoot-out as Sevilla claimed a dramatic victory over Manchester United in Budapest.
The match had finished 1-1 after 120 minutes, with Erik ten Hag's side taking the lead through Marcus Rashford in the second half before Sevilla substitute Youssef En-Nesyri leveled with just minutes remaining.
In the shoot-out, Sevilla goalkeeper Yassine Bounou saved spot-kicks from Aaron Wan-Bissaka, Jadon Sancho, and Anthony Elanga, while Alejandro Gomez, Ivan Rakitic, and Bryan Gil all scored for the Spanish side.
It is Sevilla's sixth Europa League title, moving them one clear of Liverpool in the all-time standings, and their first since 2020. For Manchester United, it is a disappointing end to the season, but they can take solace in the fact that they have made significant progress under ten Hag.
